Data Engineer – Data Modernization & Database Transformation Position Overview
We are seeking experienced Data Engineers to join a large-scale data modernization initiative for a Financial Services client. The project focuses on transforming and modernizing legacy SQL-based systems into a scalable and maintainable PostgreSQL-centric architecture.
The ideal candidate will have strong experience analyzing existing database models, understanding evolving business requirements, and designing and implementing modern relational data structures that support current and future business needs. This role requires engineers who can work collaboratively with Business Analysts, Project Managers, Database Architects, Developers, and UX teams in an environment where requirements are continuously refined throughout the project lifecycle.
This is a highly collaborative role requiring both strong technical expertise and excellent communication skills. Successful candidates will be comfortable working with partially defined requirements, contributing to solution design discussions, and helping shape the future-state data architecture. Responsibilities
Analyze and understand existing legacy database structures, data models, and business processes.
Collaborate with Business Analysts, Architects, and stakeholders to translate evolving business requirements into scalable database solutions.
Design, develop, and maintain modern relational data models in PostgreSQL.
Support database modernization and migration initiatives from legacy SQL platforms.
Develop and optimize SQL queries, stored procedures, views, and database objects.
Participate in data modeling activities, including conceptual, logical, and physical design.
Evaluate and implement hybrid relational and NoSQL approaches when appropriate to support business requirements.
Ensure data integrity, consistency, and performance across the solution.
Conduct data analysis and validation to support successful migration and transformation efforts.
Troubleshoot and resolve database-related issues, performance bottlenecks, and data quality concerns.
Work closely with cross-functional teams in an Agile environment to deliver incremental solutions.
Contribute to technical discussions and provide recommendations for improving system architecture and database design. Key Success Factors

Requisitos
Required Qualifications
4+ years of experience in Data Engineering, Database Engineering, or Data Modeling roles.
Strong experience working with relational database systems and database design principles.
Advanced SQL development and optimization skills.
Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL.
Experience analyzing and modernizing legacy database systems.
Strong understanding of data modeling methodologies, including conceptual, logical, and physical models.
Experience gathering technical requirements and translating business needs into database solutions.
Ability to understand existing systems and redesign data structures for modern applications.
Experience working in cross-functional teams with Business Analysts, Architects, Developers, and Product stakeholders.
Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
Ability to operate effectively in environments where requirements evolve over time. Preferred Qualifications
Experience migrating data platforms from Microsoft SQL Server or other legacy SQL environments to PostgreSQL.
Experience with NoSQL technologies and hybrid data architecture patterns.
Knowledge of Financial Services or Banking domains.
Experience with cloud-based database solutions on Azure.
Familiarity with data integration and ETL processes.
Experience supporting application modernization initiatives.
Exposure to Agile/Scrum development methodologies.
