Position Overview
We are currently hiring a Lead Software & AI Designer for a full-time remote or hybrid position.
This is a very senior hands-on leadership role responsible for guiding software architecture, coding standards, UI/UX direction, automated quality systems, and AI product integration across the organization.
You will work closely with engineering leadership to improve how software is built, tested, scaled, and enhanced with modern AI capabilities.
This role is ideal for a highly technical architect who still enjoys writing production code, mentoring developers, leading technical standards, and building next-generation AI-enabled products.
Important: This is a remote position for candidates living in the MTY area only.
Key Responsibilities
Software Architecture & Technical Leadership
- Lead end-to-end architecture for modern software platforms and AI-enabled applications
- Define engineering standards, coding practices, design principles, and system patterns
- Review major technical decisions, architecture proposals, and engineering direction
- Partner with senior leaders on long-term technology strategy
Hands-On Development
- Write production code across multiple environments including Python, Elixir, Rust, and SQL
- Build backend systems, APIs, AI integrations, workflow automation, and scalable services
- Guide performance, maintainability, and system reliability improvements
AI Product Integration
- Lead implementation of LLMs, multimodal AI tools, embeddings, retrieval systems, and automation workflows
- Define standards for prompts, context handling, evaluations, safety, and observability
- Evaluate vendors, models, and AI tooling based on quality, speed, and cost
Quality Engineering & Automation
- Build and improve testing frameworks, CI/CD quality gates, linters, static analysis, and validation tools
- Improve code quality, coverage, maintainability, and release confidence
- Lead large refactoring and modernization initiatives
UI / UX Leadership
- Define product usability standards, design systems, accessibility practices, and developer handoff processes
- Partner with business teams to improve user experience and workflow design
Mentorship & Team Development
- Coach engineers across multiple stacks and skill levels
- Raise technical standards through code review and mentoring
- Support growth of distributed engineering teams
Requirements
- 12+ years of professional software engineering experience
- 5+ years in senior architect, principal engineer, or technical leadership roles
- Strong hands-on expertise in Python and backend architecture
- Experience with Elixir, Rust, or other advanced modern languages
- Strong SQL skills with PostgreSQL preferred
- Production experience integrating AI tools such as LLMs, RAG systems, agents, or automation workflows
- Experience designing testing systems, CI/CD quality processes, and engineering standards
- Experience leading refactors, migrations, or modernization initiatives
- Strong written communication and architecture documentation skills
- Ability to work aligned with U.S. business hours
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience building SaaS or multi-tenant platforms at scale
- Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, or GCP
- Experience with real-time messaging, telecom systems, or distributed systems
- Experience with frontend frameworks and design systems
- Experience managing distributed engineering teams
- Familiarity with Jira and Confluence
- English required; Spanish is a plus
