Silver Lining is hiring a Financial Controller to own the day-to-day finance, bookkeeping, and compliance function for the company. This is a hands-on execution role — not a strategic CFO seat. You keep the books clean, the filings on time, and the numbers trustworthy, so the founders and leadership can make decisions on financials they can rely on.
You take over the day-to-day finance operations the company has been running in-house, working closely with leadership and our external accountants. You own end-to-end accuracy, timeliness, and compliance, and you are the single point of accountability for the integrity of our books.
How we work — read this before applying
Silver Lining is building toward a modern, AI-assisted finance function. We intend to automate routine reporting, reconciliation, and data preparation — and this role is central to setting that up and then running it as the human in the loop.
In practice, that means you will help stand up the tooling and processes, then review, validate, correct, and sign off on AI-prepared work — owning the accuracy and compliance judgment that no tool can own. You should be genuinely comfortable working alongside AI finance tools: directing them, catching their mistakes, knowing when not to trust them, and being personally accountable for the final output that leadership and regulators see.
This is not a role for someone who wants to do everything by hand, and it is not a role for someone who will rubber-stamp whatever a tool produces. We want a controller
who treats automation as leverage and treats their own review as the control that makes it safe. Candidates with experience operating as the human reviewer in an AI-augmented or highly automated finance function are strongly preferred.
What you'll do
Bookkeeping & month-end close
● Own day-to-day bookkeeping in QuickBooks Online — transaction categorization, journal entries, accruals, and a disciplined month-end close.
● Maintain a clean, auditable chart of accounts and consistent coding.
Accounts payable & receivable
● Manage AP and AR end-to-end; run, reconcile, and chase aging.
● Ensure vendors are paid on time, and receivables are collected and applied correctly.
Reconciliations
● Perform and document bank, credit card, and balance-sheet account reconciliations on a fixed cadence.
● Investigate and resolve discrepancies, leaving a clear audit trail.
Payroll
● Support payroll processing and reconciliation; ensure payroll is recorded accurately and on schedule.
Compliance & filings
● Prepare and file required statutory, tax, and compliance filings on time.
● Coordinate with external accountants and auditors; prepare clean workpapers and respond to requests.
● Track filing deadlines so nothing slips.
Reporting
● Produce clean, reliable monthly financial reporting packs — P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow.
● Deliver them on a predictable schedule with variance notes that a non-financial reader can follow.
AI / automation & controls
● Help design and stand up AI and automation tooling for finance (reconciliation, data prep, reporting).
● Act as the control point: review and validate tool output before it is relied upon, and own the final sign-off.
● Continuously tighten the process so more of the routine work is automated and your time goes to judgment and review.
Communication
● Explain financial adjustments and results clearly to non-financial founders and leadership.
● Flag risks, cash concerns, and compliance issues early and plainly.
What you bring (required)
● Proven bookkeeping/controller experience for a small business, with hands-on QuickBooks Online expertise (QuickBooks ProAdvisor or equivalent active certification preferred).
● A repeatable, documented process for producing P&Ls, AR/AP, and bank reconciliations — you can show us how you close a month.
● Comfort and confidence using AI and automation tools in a finance context; experience as the human-in-the-loop reviewer strongly preferred.
● Strong, plain-English communication — able to make complex financial detail simple for non-financial leaders.
● High integrity, sharp attention to detail, and genuine ownership of compliance and deadlines.
● Ability to work independently and remotely with minimal oversight.
Nice to have
● Experience supporting a lending, fintech, or multi-entity business.
● Familiarity with US tax and statutory filing requirements.
● Track record introducing automation or AI tooling into a finance function and owning the controls around it.
What success looks like (first 90 days)
● Month-end close runs on a predictable, documented cadence with clean reconciliations.
● The monthly reporting pack (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow) is delivered on time and trusted by leadership.
● All statutory, tax, and compliance deadlines are mapped and on track.
● A clear view of which routine tasks can be automated, with the first one or two stood up under your review.
