The Automation Engineer design, develop, integrate, and improve semi-automatic and automatic manufacturing equipment. The position focuses on mechanical machine design, from concept and 3D modeling through fabrication, assembly, debugging, validation, and production release.
Our Team
Is responsible for the mechanical development and implementation of automated manufacturing equipment. The engineer may recommend machine concepts, components, suppliers, and design changes, and identify technical or safety risks requiring correction before equipment release.
What You Will Do
- Develop machine concepts based on product, process, safety, quality, cycle-time, and production requirements.
- Design automated machines, mechanisms, tooling, fixtures, nests, feeders, transfer systems, guarding, and changeover components using 3D CAD software.
- Select and size mechanical, pneumatic, and motion components, including actuators, motors, gearboxes, bearings, and linear systems.
- Prepare 3D models, manufacturing drawings, assembly drawings, bills of materials, tolerances, and technical specifications.
- Apply GD&T, tolerance analysis, DFM, safety, ergonomics, maintainability, and mistake-proofing principles.
- Coordinate component fabrication, procurement, machine assembly, installation, and mechanical adjustments.
- Integrate mechanical designs with PLC controls, sensors, servomotors, robots, vision systems, pneumatics, and safety devices.
- Participate in design reviews, DFMEA/PFMEA, equipment risk assessments, debugging, validation, and production release.
- Troubleshoot mechanical and electromechanical problems and implement improvements in safety, quality, uptime, scrap, productivity, and reliability.
- Manage assigned automation projects from concept through implementation, coordinating internal resources and suppliers.
- Prepare technical documentation, preventive maintenance recommendations, spare-parts lists, and training materials.
- Support applicable company, quality, environmental, and EH&S management systems and perform other duties assigned by management.
- Ensure that the new product development process meets the PDP process requirements for each stage, drive corrective and preventive actions for all concerns related to the machinery and equipment manufacturing process through interaction with the various Molex engineering centers to obtain the information necessary for the development of the product/process.
- Understand, support and contribute to current MBM Philosophy, Six Sigma, EICC, ISO, IAFT and Environmental, and/or Health and Safety (EH&S) Management Systems by following stated policies and procedures.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by management.
Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical, Mechatronics, Electromechanical, Automation Engineering, or a related field
- Minimum four years of experience designing, developing, or integrating automated manufacturing machinery, including experience from concept and 3D design through fabrication, debugging, and implementation.
- Advanced 3D CAD skills using SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo, or equivalent.
- Strong knowledge of machine design, mechanisms, tooling, manufacturing processes, GD&T, and tolerances.
- Experience preparing drawings, bills of materials, and technical specifications.
- Experience selecting mechanical, pneumatic, and motion-control components.
- Knowledge of DFM/DFA, machine safety, ergonomics, reliability, and maintainability.
- Working knowledge of PLC-controlled equipment, sensors, robotics, vision systems, servomotors, and pneumatics.
- Experience coordinating fabrication, assembly, debugging, and equipment installation.
- Project management, problem-solving, and technical communication skills.
What Will Put You Ahead
- Experience in connector, terminal, cable, harness, electronics, automotive, or high-volume assembly processes is preferred.
- Experience with automated assembly, insertion, feeding, inspection, packaging, or material-handling equipment.
- Experience working with machine shops, equipment builders, and automation suppliers.
