The Senior Software Engineer, Backend will join our Core Digital Engineering team responsible for designing, building, and evolving the backend services that power products used by millions of users across the U.S., Mexico, Spain, and Latin America.
The Senior Software Engineer will design and develop highly scalable distributed systems, resilient microservices, and cloud-native applications that support one of the largest Spanish-language streaming platforms in the world. Working closely with Product, Architecture, DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), QA, Security, and fellow engineering teams, this role will help deliver reliable, high-performance backend systems while contributing to the evolution of our engineering standards and platform architecture.
This is a hands-on senior engineering role for someone who enjoys solving complex distributed systems challenges, building software at internet scale, and continuously improving platform performance, reliability, scalability, and maintainability.

YOUR DAY-TO-DAY: (Responsibilities)

Design, build, and maintain highly scalable backend services and microservices supporting TelevisaUnivision's digital products.

Develop secure, resilient, and high-performance RESTful APIs and/or gRPC services consumed by millions of users.

Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code using modern software engineering practices, including unit, integration, and performance testing.

Design distributed systems capable of supporting high traffic, low latency, and high availability.

Optimize application performance across services, databases, caching layers, messaging systems, and cloud infrastructure.

Participate in architecture reviews and influence technical decisions for new products, platform enhancements, and modernization initiatives.

Take ownership of backend services throughout their lifecycle, including design, implementation, deployment, monitoring, maintenance, and continuous improvement.

Serve as a technical leader on complex engineering initiatives by helping guide architectural decisions, establishing engineering best practices, and influencing technical direction across the team.

Collaborate closely with Product Managers, Architects, DevOps, QA, Security, and cross-functional engineering teams throughout the software development lifecycle.

Perform thoughtful code reviews while mentoring engineers and promoting engineering best practices across the organization.

Improve platform observability through centralized logging, monitoring, distributed tracing, and performance metrics.

Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation, and continuous delivery initiatives that improve software quality and release velocity.

Drive technical debt reduction, platform modernization, and adoption of modern backend engineering practices.

Participate in production support, incident response, root cause analysis, and continuous reliability improvements.

Influence engineering decisions through data-driven problem solving, technical expertise, and collaborative partnership across teams.
YOU HAVE: (Qualifications, Experience)

6+ years of professional experience building backend applications in production environments.
-
Strong experience designing distributed systems and scalable service-oriented architectures.
-
Expert-level proficiency in at least one modern backend programming language such as Go, Java, Python, C#, or a comparable language.

Extensive experience designing and implementing RESTful APIs and/or gRPC services.
-
Strong understanding of software architecture principles, including SOLID, Clean Architecture, Domain-Driven Design (DDD), and common design patterns.

Experience working with relational and NoSQL databases, including schema design, query optimization, indexing, and performance tuning.

Hands-on experience with caching technologies such as Redis or Memcached.

Experience with asynchronous messaging and event-driven architectures using Kafka, RabbitMQ, Google Pub/Sub, or similar technologies.

Experience deploying and operating services within cloud environments, preferably Google Cloud Platform (GCP) or AWS.

Strong knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, container orchestration, and cloud-native application development.

Experience implementing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines and automated deployment processes.

Familiarity with observability tools including centralized logging, monitoring, metrics, and distributed tracing.

Strong understanding of backend security best practices, including authentication, authorization, API security, and secrets management.

Experience working within Agile software development environments.

Demonstrated ability to independently lead complex technical initiatives from design through production while balancing scalability, reliability, and maintainability.

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent practical experience).

Experience working with AI-assisted software development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Cursor, ChatGPT, Claude Code, or similar) to improve engineering productivity and software quality.

Experience working within globally distributed engineering organizations across multiple time zones.
