About Palouse Homes
Palouse Homes is a vertically integrated real estate company managing ~1,000 multifamily units across Washington and Montana. From acquisitions to property management to maintenance, we operate the full lifecycle of housing with a single mission: scaling high-quality, affordable housing in underserved U.S. markets.
We are now building our automation layer: reducing manual work, eliminating repetitive processes, and designing systems that let a lean team manage a growing portfolio efficiently.
About the Role
You'll be part of the team responsible for turning how Palouse Homes actually operates (leasing, maintenance, personnel, finance, and more) into working software: internal tools, integrations, and systems that replace manual processes and disconnected third-party services. We're actively building a proprietary internal platform to bring these operations under one roof, but the work goes beyond any single project. As the org grows, new problems keep surfacing that need a real engineer, not another spreadsheet or one-off script.
You'll start by deeply understanding how our operations actually work today, shadowing operational teams across the business to understand how they function. From there, you'll take ownership of your own project or workstream: designing, building, and shipping using APIs, our internal platform, and AI tools like Claude, while staying in sync with the rest of the team.
How You'll Ramp
Phase 1: Learn the business
- Shadow operational teams across the business to understand how they function
- Learn the systems already in place: our property management platform, our tenant support/ticketing system, and the internal tools we're building in-house
- Map existing workflows end to end, including the edge cases and exceptions that never make it into an SOP
- Identify the highest-leverage automation opportunities
Phase 2: Build
- Take ownership of a real workstream and start developing
- Use AI tools like Claude alongside our internal platform and available APIs to move faster
Example Projects (Real, Active Work)
- Internal platform development - our internal operations platform is being built from the ground up, covering property, personnel, fleet, and document management. Extend an existing module or build a new one.
- Tenant ticketing automation - auto-categorize and route tenant violation and support tickets, trigger downstream actions (like creating records in our property management system) directly from a ticket, and cut down on manual tenant-communication work.
- Communications system migration - help finish moving our team off third-party phone/VOIP tools onto our own communications system.
What You'll Do
- Design and build software that solves real operational problems as they come up: a platform module, an integration, an automation tool, or som
- Take a project from a rough problem statement through to a working, adopted solution: scoping, building, testing, and iterating with feedback from the people who'll actually use it
- Work with relational databases and real production data (schema design, migrations, data integrity)
- Use APIs from our property management, ticketing, and other operational systems to extract, transform, and sync data
- Build dashboards and internal tools that combine multiple data sources into a single, actionable view
- Write and maintain documentation (SOPs, technical docs, runbooks) as systems evolve, so your work stays usable and maintainable by others, not just you
- Use AI tools like Claude to speed up development, debugging, and documentation
- Track and break down your own work into manageable phases and tasks, and communicate progress and blockers clearly
- Collaborate on design before making significant changes to shared systems or conventions, rather than building in isolation
- Evaluate, and where it makes sense, convert existing ad hoc tools into more robust, maintainable systems
What We're Looking For
Required
- CS or software engineering degree, or equivalent, plus real prior project experience (not just coursework)
- Solid full-stack fundamentals: comfortable moving between backend, frontend, and database work
- Ability to work with REST APIs
- Git/GitHub fluency (branches, PRs, issues, project boards)
- Comfortable using AI tools like Claude to speed up coding, debugging, and documentation
- Able to write clear documentation, not just working code
Mindset
- Strong systems thinker, able to see how tools, people, and processes interact
- Comfortable operating in ambiguity and imperfect systems; this is a small team solving whatever the business needs next, not a fixed backlog
- Able to translate messy real-world workflows into clean, scalable systems
- Able to work independently on a defined scope while communicating clearly, without needing constant direction
Nice to Have
- Experience in real estate, property management, or another operations-heavy business
- Cloud infrastructure experience (AWS or similar)
- SSO/auth systems experience
Why This Role Matters
- You'll directly reduce operational drag across a portfolio of ~1,000 units
- Your work compounds: every automation and every platform module scales with the portfolio as we grow
- You'll help define how a modern, tech-enabled property management platform operates, not maintain someone else's
