The Honorary Consul’s main purpose will be to help maintain the reach of British Embassy in Mexico, primarily through the promotion of British commercial and business interests, and the development of existing strategic partnerships within the Monterrey area, following the closure of our Consulate General in March 2026.
Whilst historically an Honorary Consul’s main role has usually been to support the delivery of consular work, the role of the Honorary Consul in Monterrey will be entirely focused on commercial representation.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The Honorary Consul (Commercial) in Monterrey will:
Promote UK Trade and Investment
- Identify opportunities to increase bilateral trade and investment.
- Support UK companies operating in or entering the local market.
- Facilitate connections between UK and local businesses.
Build Strategic Partnerships
Develop and maintain strong relationships with:
- Local government and regulators.
- Business leaders and chambers of commerce.
- Key economic stakeholders.
Represent the UK Locally
- Promote UK economic priorities, strengths, and capabilities.
- Support and attend commercial events, trade delegations, and visits.
- Enhance the visibility of the UK’s business offer locally.
Provide Market Insight
Share local intelligence and insights on:
- Economic trends.
- Sector opportunities.
- Market access issues.
Support Official Engagement
Assist with logistics and stakeholder engagement during visits by UK officials or trade missions.
Code of Conduct
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Represent the UK Government with integrity, professionalism, and impartiality.
- Act in accordance with UK policy and local law.
- Maintain strict confidentiality.
- Avoid conflicts of interest and declare any that arise.
- Ensure activities do not compromise the reputation of the UK Government.
REPORTING & GOVERNANCE
The Honorary Consul will report to the DBT Mexico Country Director, working under the guidance of the FCDO’s Department of Business and Trade.
Honorary Consuls are formally recognised as Consular Officers under international conventions. However, this role does not include routine consular casework.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must demonstrate:
- A strong network within the local business and economic community.
- Proven experience in commercial, trade, or investment-related roles.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
- Good understanding of local market conditions and opportunities.
- Fluency in English and Spanish.
- Ability to live and work in Mexico in their own right, specifically in Monterrey, N.L.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- British nationality
- Experience working with international partners or government stakeholders.
- Familiarity with UK business or institutions.
- Experience supporting trade promotion or market entry activities.
APPOINTMENT TERMS & OTHER RELEVANT INFORMATION
This is a voluntary role which does not entail an employment relationship with the British Embassy in Mexico nor the Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).
The appointment is unsalaried, and carries no entitlement to a pension, terminal gratuities, nor any other salary-related benefit.
The selected candidate will be expected to work on average for the duration of the appointment, receiving an Annual Honorarium for their services, in the amount of £2,500, which will be paid once per year, in local currency.
It will be the selected candidate’s responsibility to deal with any tax implications which may arise from this honorarium directly with the relevant local authorities.
The successful candidate will be subject to the proper or , and any real, potential or perceived conflicts of interest must be considered prior to appointment.
Candidates must be able to live and work in Mexico in their own right at time of application.
