Ares Materials is a fast-growing Series B startup building advanced software platforms that connect science, data, and AI, working with some of the world's leading technology companies to accelerate innovation in materials discovery.
Behind that work is the infrastructure we run: Linux systems, high-availability virtualized environments, GPU-enabled infrastructure, and HPC resources that power scientific simulations, machine learning workflows, and large-scale computing for our research and engineering teams.
We're looking for an IT Infrastructure Technician Intern who is passionate about technology, enjoys solving technical problems, and wants to learn how this infrastructure is built and operated. It's ideal for students, recent graduates, or those in their final semester in Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, or a related field. No professional work experience required.
Important: Note that this is a hands-on infrastructure and operations role, not a software development one. You'll physically build, cable, and troubleshoot servers and hardware, and understand the basics of how the systems you work with function rather than treating them as black boxes. We value well-rounded fundamentals over narrow expertise. Before applying, make sure you're comfortable with both the physical and technical sides of infrastructure.

What You’ll Do
* Act as the primary point of contact for identifying and resolving technical challenges affecting infrastructure and its users.
* Support all aspects of the HPC environment, including compute resources, job scheduling systems, storage, networking, and user support.
* Assemble, deploy, maintain, and troubleshoot servers, workstations, and infrastructure hardware.
* Implement and maintain security best practices, including access control, patch management, encryption, and vulnerability remediation.
* Administer Linux-based systems and automate operational tasks.
* Install, compile, and configure open source software on Linux systems.
* Maintain virtualization platforms and supporting infrastructure.
* Deploy, maintain, and troubleshoot infrastructure and application services.
* Deploy and maintain automation tools and operational scripts.
* Maintain and utilize monitoring, logging, backup, and disaster recovery solutions.
* Generate, maintain, and improve technical documentation for infrastructure, services, and operational procedures.

What We’re Looking For
* Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
* Really strong interest in Linux, infrastructure, networking, and technology.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
* Ability to learn independently and adapt to new technologies.
* Good communication and documentation skills.

Unlike highly specialized roles, you’ll have the opportunity to work on the full stack of infrastructure challenges, from assembling hardware and troubleshooting networks to deploying services, supporting computational workloads, and improving system reliability.
We don't expect you to know everything on day one, and we'd much rather you ask a good question than struggle in silence to look self-sufficient. We're looking for someone who is curious, resourceful, enjoys solving problems, and is excited to learn.
