Head of Technology (Full‑Time, Remote)
We’re CatchCo, makers of Mystery Tackle Box — the original fishing subscription box since 2012. Our mission is to Rescue Humanity From the Indoors. Today, we help millions get outside with products sold at Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Amazon, and direct-to-consumer. We’ve moved past the venture-backed hype and are now under new ownership, building a lean, profitable, and lasting business. If you believe in getting people outdoors and doing work that matters, you’ll fit right in.
You will own CatchCo’s technology strategy and execution. The stack you inherit is in the best shape it has been in years. A newly implemented inventory and order management system sits at the center of operations, IT infrastructure and helpdesk are handled by an outside provider, a dedicated Shopify E-Commerce Manager runs day-to-day store operations, and contract developers maintain our custom applications.
Your job is not to keep the lights on. Your job is to move us forward. That means a technology roadmap that ships measurable business results every quarter, and aggressive adoption of AI across the company. We believe a company our size can operate with the technical leverage of a company several times larger, and this role is how that happens. You will be hands-on where it counts: scoping and prototyping solutions, auditing code, and integrating systems, while contractors and vendors carry most of the implementation load.
-
Technology roadmap. Maintain a rolling roadmap tied to business outcomes: site conversion, subscriber retention, operating margin, and team productivity. Prioritize it, communicate it, and ship it.
-
AI adoption. Identify, pilot, and deploy AI solutions across the company: customer service automation, agent workflows, content operations, data analysis, and internal tooling. Teach the team to use these tools well. This is a first-class responsibility, not a side project.
-
Commerce systems and integrations. Own the integrated stack that runs the business: Shopify and Recharge (DTC subscription), Klaviyo (lifecycle marketing), and our inventory, order management, and accounting systems, plus the connections to systems we depend on but do not own, including our 3PL’s warehouse management system and retailer EDI.
-
Consumer digital product. Drive development of our site beyond the storefront: gifting, the About My Box experience, subscriber account features, and new digital products that make the subscription more valuable. Scope requirements, manage the developers, and ship.
-
Marketing technology. Own the tracking and attribution stack end to end: Google Tag Manager, server-side tagging, conversion APIs, and Klaviyo events.
-
Data infrastructure. Own our data pipelines end to end, from ELT into the warehouse through transformation and BI. They have grown organically and need consolidation. Make them coherent, trusted, and cheaper.
-
Reliability and observability. Build monitoring that catches order-flow and integration failures before customers or customer service do. Drive root-cause fixes, not patches.
-
Vendors and contractors. Scope, estimate, and manage external developers and technology vendors. Hold timelines, require documentation, and eliminate single-person dependencies on critical systems.
-
Team. Manage the Shopify E-Commerce Manager and contract developers, and act as the technology partner to leaders in marketing, operations, and finance.
-
AI-native. You use AI daily and it shows. You have shipped LLM-based automations or agents that other people rely on, and you get restless watching a team do manually what software could do.
-
Marketing technology and data depth. Hands-on expertise with Google Tag Manager, server-side tagging, event tracking, and modern data pipelines (warehouse, ELT, transformation, BI). You have consolidated a messy data stack before and cut its cost while improving trust in the numbers.
-
Integration and scripting strength. REST APIs, webhooks, and working fluency in languages like Python, JavaScript, and SQL. You connect systems quickly and safely.
-
Engineering depth without a stack requirement. You can read, audit, and supervise work in an unfamiliar codebase (ours includes C#/.NET). You do not need to be a .NET expert. You need to never be intimidated by code.
-
Ecommerce and digital product experience. You know the Shopify ecosystem and have built consumer-facing web features, not just maintained a storefront. Subscription commerce (Recharge or similar) and EDI exposure are a plus.
-
Project discipline. You gather requirements before work starts, give honest estimates, communicate status without being asked, and deliver the dates you set.
-
Business judgment. You translate technical work into business terms and pick projects by ROI, not novelty.
-
Remote communication. Clear, proactive, and specific in writing. You make direct asks of named people with dates attached.
-
Within 90 days you will publish a technology roadmap the executive team has bought into and ship your first AI-driven improvement to a real workflow. Over the first year we expect measurable wins on four fronts: team productivity through AI adoption, reliability of our order and data flows, a consolidated and cheaper data pipeline, and consumer-facing improvements to the site.
Practical experience is valued over credentials. If you have taken a commerce stack to the next generation and can show the results, we want to hear from you.
